CoEd Varsity Cross Country
Thank you for those that have answered the survey and turned in paperwork to be able to participate in Conditioning Practices starting next week. If you have not and are interested in participating, please do!
Working with the other Woodson team's coach's requests, we have been assigned two days a week, Monday and Tuesday. Due to these days proximity to each other within the week, while also not being able to allow them to run elsewhere other than our assigned areas, I have decided each gender will practice separately until if there is a relaxation of restrictions in order to make social distancing easier to accomplish.
Monday - 4:30pm, Girls Team - (Link to Sign-Up Genius) Please sign up using the athlete's full name.
Tuesday - 3:30pm, Boys Team - (Link to Sign-Up Genius) Please sign up using the athlete's full name.
Please do not sign up for a slot until all of your paperwork has been turned into the trainer and you have turned in a completed emergency care card, preferably emailed to me.
Protocols for your arrival and during practices:
????????????????Athletes will arrive in a staggered fashion by the time they signed up for in the sign-up genius. Upon arrival, cars will line up in the parking lot near the Woodson stadium entrance. Everyone in the car must be wearing a mask and a masked coach will arrive, at your window and present a QR code for each athlete in the car to pre-fill out a Google form on their phone for when the athletic trainer can get to your car. The athletic trainer will work their way from car to car taking temperatures of athletes in the car and inputting the temperature reading into the Google Form to submit once complete.
Upon passing the checks, athletes will be allowed to leave their car wearing a mask and will walk up towards the stadium, eventually to be escorted by a coach to the back fields behind the stadium where we will practice when all of the arrival group of 9 has been screened. Athletes will warm-up in their groups based on arrival, socially distanced at least 10 feet apart on the field. Following their warm-up run and drills, athletes will complete an organized running workout, running the perimeter of the fields in a manner in which athletes will never intersect. While completing the workout, students will not be required to wear masks but MUST maintain a 10 feet distance from any other athletes. Athletes will run either in a single file fashion, staggering when they begin the workout, or run in pairs, separated by 10 feet as they run the perimeter of the back fields.
Following completion of the prescribed amount of running for the workout, athletes will stretch and complete a body strength routine, once again socially distanced on the field. Upon completion of the stretching and strength routine, we will allow athletes to leave in a staggered fashion, again by groups in which they arrived.
Full practice, including screening time must not exceed two hours. For athletes arriving at 4:30/3:30, your departure/pickup time will be 6:15/5:15. For athletes arriving at 4:40/3:40, your departure/pickup time will be 6:20/5:20, For athletes arriving at 4:50, your departure/pickup time will be 6:25/5:25. It is imperative that athletes' rides be there waiting for them upon their staggered departure so they do not congregate in the parking lot waiting.
- Students MUST arrive to the entrance to the Woodson Stadium at their scheduled time, in a staggered fashion and line up in their cars/in the parking lot waiting to be checked in by a coach, and the athletic trainer.
- Cloth face coverings are required any time social distancing cannot be maintained; if participants are at least 10 feet apart, no mask is required, this will be strictly enforced by the coaches. If a student is found to be disregarding the rules, they will be warned once, and then sent home upon a second violation.
- Students MUST provide their own water bottle of ATLEAST 32 oz. of water. If a student arrives with less than 32 ounces of water they will be sent home.
- Anyone with symptoms or a temperature of 100.4 and above MUST be sent home
Should you have any questions about procedures please don't hesitate to send them my way. It is truly important athletes are aware of the protocols and follow them once at practice or they will be asked to leave.
I hope this update finds everyone well. I just wanted to share where we currently stand and provide information going into the start of the school year.
FCPS recently moved athletics into Phase 3, which means slightly relaxing restrictions around conditioning practices. This doesn't mean much yet for our sport (we will still be confined to a particular area on campus we are assigned), but hopefully it is a precursor of further improvement in Coronavirus conditions around the region. With the start of school I believe it will be important to provide the athletes with a safe as possible outlet to get away from the screen once or twice a week (depending on numbers) and be active. For this reason I have begun the process of getting approval for conditioning practices. I will be hearing back early this week officially which days we will get after the athletics office reviews requests from all of Woodson's teams and coaches. I have put in for 4:30 practice slots for whatever combination of days our team receives, feeling that 4:30 will give students a bit of time to decompress following the end of the school day and also make their way to Woodson, more so than the alternative 3:30 slot.
I am looking to begin practices next week, after the students have had a week to adjust to school starting. In order to participate in Green Day practices, all paperwork must be submitted prior to the start of practices. Physicals and Concussion Education paperwork needs to be turned into the Athletic trainer via email ([email protected]) and I need to receive the Emergency Care Card, preferably via email, all of which can be located on the Woodson Athletics website here with more detailed directions.
I will be following this update up with further information over the coming days with the protocols we will adhere to in order to be allowed to hold these practices. While I know I asked for the completion of a conditioning practice survey earlier in the summer, I would greatly appreciate if you could fill out a quick survey again for your child to be able to gauge interest in participating in these practices. The amount of interest will decide whether athletes can attend one or maybe two practices a week as there is a limit on the number of athletes that can participate at a time. You can find the survey at this link. Additionally, I have uploaded a new "base training" plan into the team files, please take a look.
Anyone new athletes to Woodson XC who would like to be added to our Off-Season Google Classroom or parents who would like to be added to the email blast list who have not already done so, please shoot me an email so I can get you added and introduce myself!
Woodson Cross Country
Due to COVID-19 the Cross Country season has been postponed until February.
Season 2 (Fall) February 15 – May 1 (First Contest Date – March 1) cheer, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, volleyball
With the VHSL decision delaying Cross Country until February and with FCPS deciding to move all learning to virtual, I have decided that for the time being there will not be any yellow day practices. We will continue to monitor the conditions and should they change we can reconsider our options. Should yellow days become viable as we move into the anticipated start of the school year, participation would not require a physical!
That said, if VHSL and FCPS allowed progression into a “Green Day” schedule for sports, physicals and all associated paperwork would be required.
All of these forms and links will be available on the www.wtwoodson.org website, accessible in the "team links" section.
3. Emergency Care Card (Emailed or turned in to Coach Kroner)
So what's next?
Once again we find ourselves with a long time between now and when we may compete. That does not change our ambitions! There has been a lot of great running that has happened this summer with athletes of both genders literally having runs hundreds of miles since our team meeting in early Spring. The most I've heard is over 400 since April! Impressive to say the least! It's a bummer we will not truly be able to see the fruits of that labor until nearly Christmas for those that are doing Indoor Track but the changes to the schedule will only continue to reward those that are diligent, getting out day in and day out, not being discouraged by the heat and adapting to the hardship!
You can find the updated information and base training plan through the start of the school year in the "team files" section.
If you are an incoming Freshman and new to Cross Country or already at Woodson and just want to try something new, please reach out to Coach Kroner so he can add you to the Team Google Classroom.
If you are a parent or student who would like to be added to the team email blast please reach out!
Lastly, there will be a virtual team interest meeting sometime in September after the start of school. Access to the meeting will be likely through Blackboard Collaborate Ultra and provided at a later date.
I hope everyone is well and not going too stir crazy! Believe it or not, it is that time of the year again! I am extremely excited to be taking the reigns for the upcoming Cross Country season. I will be holding a virtual interest meeting for the 2020 Cross Country season next week. The meeting is scheduled for May 6th at 1:30pm. Please spread the word to anyone who you may think would be interested in being part of the team!
If you are interested in attending this meeting you need to email me so that I can send you the session information. We will be holding the meeting via BBCU, the same platform as your classes, and I need to invite each of you individually to be able to attend, if you have an FCPS email, please reach out via that email!
At the meeting we will be discussing important information like:
- standards to make the team
- summer training plans
- individual goal meetings
- And more!
To get started, I ask that you fill out this general interest survey to give me some information about you and your goals for the upcoming season.
A copy of the information packet can be found in the "team files" section.
Any questions please don't hesitate to reach out
