In tonight's Northern Region Championship played at Lake Braddock High School Woodson faced Patriot District rival the West Springfield Spartans for the 4th time this season. The pitching matchup featured Northern Region Pitcher of the Year, senior Bobby Wahl, with junior Bryson Hough getting the nod for the Cavaliers.

For the opening two innings both pitchers were in command allowing little in the way of offense with Wahl only allowing one Cavalier to reach base and Hough surrendering a hit in the 1st and 2 hits in the 2nd but no runs. That all changed in the bottom of the 3rd when the Spartans touched Hough for 6 runs.

Charlie Morgan started things off with a one out double in the gap in right center. Wahl was intentionally walked. Next, Kyle Snyder got an infield single to load the bases. Daniel Allen then singled to center to score Morgan and courtesy runner Jake Trump. Garrett Wooddell doubled to right center to score Snyder, then Snook followed with a double of his own plating Allen and Wooddell.  Tyler Basse made it 6 straight hits with an infield single. Hough tried to turn Nick Stevens comebacker to the mound into an inning ending double play however the Cavs only got the out at second and Snook scored from third making it a 6-0 game. Spartans leadoff hitter Bubba Self singled to right and that spelled the end of the night for Hough. In the inning everything was working for West Springfield's hitters as their batters all found open space in the Cavalier defense.  Joe McGillicuddy came on to face Morgan and struck him out to end the inning.

Meanwhile Wahl kept Woodson's bats silent not allowing a hit in 5 innings of work.

The Spartans extended the lead to 11-0 with a 5 run 5th inning against Joe McGillicuddy.  Basse, Stevens, and Self hit consecutive singles with Self’s hit bringing home Basse. Morgan then laced his second double of the game to right center for score Stevens and Self. McGillicuddy got ahead of Wahl 1-2 but Wahl took him deep on the next pitch for a two run home run and an 11 run lead. McGillicuddy retired Snyder on a fly to right for out number two then issued a walk to Allen. Coach Warren visited the mound and summoned sophomore Brant Thomas from the bullpen. Thomas got Wooddell to fly out to Finnerty in right for the final out.

Having built up a large lead West Springfield elected to pull Wahl. J. T. Williamson entered the game to pitch in the 6th. The move helped the Woodson offense as they surged for 6 runs cutting the lead to 11-6 leading to Williamson's early exit. Colin Dempsey singled to center to start things off. With one out, Connor Finnerty walked to put runners on first and second. Matt Patrick singled to center to score the speedy Dempsey. Williamson got a strikeout for out number two but the rally was far from done. John McGillicuddy singled home Finnerty. David Rozner’s sharp hit to left center went for a double bringing Patrick and McGillicuddy in. Ryan Lluy followed with a double of his own to score Rozner. Williamson then exited as the Spartans brought on Mikey Simko to pitch to pinch hitter Matt Powell. Powell’s infield single moved Lluy ahead 90 feet and he scored from there on Dempsey’s second base hit of the inning. Simko got Breslin to hit a ground ball to force out Dempsey at second but the lead had now been cut by over half.

Unfortunately the Spartans added to their lead in the next at bat with 3 more runs. Snook singled to center then after an out Stevens walked on 4 pitches. Woodson then changed pitchers again bringing Connor Finnerty in from right field to pitch with Rozner taking over in right. Finnerty got Self to fly to right for the second out but then Morgan brought home Snook with a single to center. Simko drew a walk to load the bases. Snyder worked Finnerty for a full count then hit a ground ball to short. The throw to first was low and bounced several times getting past Patrick. As it was a 3-2 count the runners were all moving and two more runs scored giving the Spartans a 14-6 lead.

In their final at bat Simko gave up a run on a double by Matt Patrick and RBI single to center by Connor Reilly but Simko got the final out on a fortunate bounce off his leg directly to first baseman Morgan.
