A large crowd was on hand at Robinson High School's Robert Menefee Stadium on a summer-like evening to watch tonight's district semifinal matchup of Patriot District rivals Woodson and Lake Braddock. It was the third meeting of the two teams this season with the Bruins winning the first two.
The Patriot District #4 seed Cavaliers were the visiting team facing Kenny Towns and the #1 seeded Bruins. Towns set down the Cavaliers first three batters on 13 pitches. In the bottom of the inning the potent Lake Braddock offense didn’t take long to threaten to score. Woodson starter John McGillicuddy walked leadoff batter Ryan Lindemuth on 5 pitches. He retired Michael Nebrich on a fly ball to left then Kenny Towns singled and Bobby Klein was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Andrew Weidinger worked a 2-2 count before hitting a comebacker to McGillicuddy who threw home to Connor Reilly to force out Lindemuth then Reilly fired to Matt Patrick at first to retire Weidinger for an inning ending double play.
Knowing they dodged a bullet, the Woodson offense surged to the lead in the 2nd. Matt Patrick led off the inning by lining a single to left. Connor Reilly followed with a single to center. John McGillicuddy sacrificed the runners to second and third. With one out David Rozner hit a grounder to second baseman Patch McLucas. McLucas sailed his throw over Klein’s head allowing two runs to score while Rozner raced to second. Lluy grounded out to McLucas but on the play Rozner moved up to third. With two outs and Mitch Prosperi at the plate, Towns threw a curve ball that got past Weidinger allowing Rozner to score building the lead to 3-0.
McGillicuddy allowed a couple of baserunners in the bottom of the 2nd on a single and a walk but held the Bruins scoreless.
In the 3rd, Brendan Breslin hit a one out single to right. After Towns got the second out via strikeout, Patrick got his second straight hit, a single to right center scoring Breslin easily for a 4-0 lead. Lake Braddock got the run back in their next at bat. Nebrich reached on an error with one out. He moved up to second on a wild pitch. Bobby Klein then worked McGillicuddy for nine pitches before hitting an RBI double to left center trimming the lead to 4-1.
Woodson’s offense continued to produce runs as they scored two more runs in the 4th. David Rozner stroked a one out single to right. Towns got ahead of Ryan Lluy 1-2 but Lluy got all of Towns next pitch driving it over the fence in center for a 2-run homer. It was Lluy’s second home run in as many games. Following the home run Lake Braddock made a pitching change moving Lindemuth from shortstop to the mound with Towns taking over at short.
Now with a 6-1 lead McGillicuddy worked quickly against the bottom of the Bruins order retiring the side on just nine pitches although McLucas did manage to reach base on an error.
In the 5th inning the Cavaliers sent nine players to the plate scoring 5 runs to break the game open. Breslin got a one out single to right and Connor Finnerty drew a 4 pitch walk. With the third baseman Alex Gransback playing in, Matt Patrick hit a sharp liner off Gransback’s glove for a single loading the bases. Reilly hit a slow grounder to third. Gransback threw home but Breslin beat the throw for a 7-1 lead. John McGillicuddy gave himself two more runs to work with as he singled to left to score Finnerty and Patrick.
The Bruins made another pitching change bringing in Tyler Kinne. Kinne walked Rozner to reload the bases. With Lluy at the plate a wild pitch on a third strike brought in Brant Thomas (courtesy runner for Reilly) while Ryan Fitzgerald (courtesy runner for McGillicuddy) and Rozner moved up a base. Matt Powell, pinch hitting for Prosperi, lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Fitzgerald and the Cavs had a 11-1 lead.
The Bruins answered with 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the 5th. Lindemuth started the inning with a double. Nebrich had a swinging bunt single then Towns singled to left to bring home Lindemuth. Klein walked on a full count to load the bases. Weidinger was hit by a pitch to score Nebrich with the bases still loaded. Ryan Owens hit a shallow fly ball to Prosperi in center for the first out. Michael Fanning then hit a sharp line drive that went in and out of the glove of third baseman Joe Brendler. Brendler quickly picked up the ball and tagged third for a force out on Klein then fired home to Reilly who tagged out the sliding Towns for the third out. This was a critical double play turn as it appeared the Bruins were on the verge of putting together one of their signature rallies.
In the top of the 6th Kinne surrendered a double to right by Finnerty that one hopped off the fence but the Cavs were held scoreless. McGillicuddy allowed two out singles by Lindemuth and Nebrich but managed to retire Towns on a fly ball to Prosperi in center to end the inning with the lead remaining 11-3.
Woodson’s McGillicuddy led off the final inning with a single to center. Ryan Talento entered as a courtesy runner for McGillicuddy. Talento made it all the way to third on a couple of wild pitches but Kinne notched three consecutive strikeouts stranding Talento.
McGillicuddy needed just nine pitches to close out the game for the victorious Cavaliers. Klein lined out to Lluy for the first out. Weidinger grounded out to the steady Joe Brendler at third for the second out. Owens singled through the middle to keep the Bruins alive but Fanning hit a soft fly ball to Prosperi in center who hauled it to seal the victory.
The win places the Cavaliers in the Northern Region Championship game against the West Springfield Spartans on Friday.
